What does behaviour analysis mean?
Behavior analysis refers to the assessment, prediction and explanation of all kind of behaviours. It’s directly related to laboratory psychology, and it’s based on a series of laws and learning principles scientifically proven. One of the most useful tools from behavior analysis is the functional analysis, which is comprehensive study of how people interact with their environment.
Functional analysis focuses not only in the person’s learning history, but also in its present conditions. This is not limited to what surrounds us (social relationships, work environment…) Functional analysis requires the deep understanding of the emotions and all the inner thoughts and feelings. A detailed registry of the circumstances in which a behaviour happens is the starting point to explain why it happens, how it was acquired and (with high probability) when will it happen again. All of this would be impossible without the huge research of psychological science, that joins experimental analysis and applied behaviour analysis building the scientific bases of what we do.
We take this point very seriously. When we offer a person a solution to their psychological problems, the tool must be scientifically proven and must have shown its benefits trough experimentation. Applying not scientifically tested methods, would be no more than personal opinion or preferences. We believe that a clinical psychologist is not a buddy or guru. Aclinical psychologist is someone who has studied and knows what is happening. Only trough comprehensive analysis of the case and applying functional analysis an optimal solution for each problem can be implemented.
To help you solve what troubles you in the best of ways in a durable manner, we follow a procedure structured in different steps:
To exactly know what is happening to you, we will need to ask a lot of questions and gather information. Each case is unique, and our methodology is based on a personal and individualized study. Understanding you is what we call the evaluation step, which lasts for about 2 or 3 sessions (this can vary depending on the complexity of the case). During this stage, we will try to find what caused the problem, why is it currently displayed and how can we help you to address it; In this stage, we will be using interviews and tasks or homework. It is very important for the psychologist to have a picture of what happens outside the hour in session, hence the homework.
We use one of the most important tools at a psychologist’s disposal to explain you what is happening to you: the behaviour’s functional analysis. With this we weave a complex web of connections between an individual and his/her inner and outer environment, so we can explain how the problem was acquired and how it is going to be solved. Besides, a list of objectives is proposed in order to check how the therapy is advancing.
In this step we will teach you and train you in the techniques best suited to solve your problem. As we always say, these techniques are scientifically proved, and if they are correctly applied and you are committed, you will make the necessary changes to achieve the objectives previously proposed.
Once the objectives are completed, we will have sporadic contact to check if the changes are still maintained.
Human knowledge never stops advancing; that is why it would be dangerous for professionals to develop our work only with what we learned at the university. A clinical psychologist’s work is about helping a person; a researcher’s work is about helping society as a whole. We take for granted that the results coming from research help to improve the quality of life of people, and when it comes to psychology, this relationship is even more clear. We can do therapy thanks to the advances coming from psychological research, so it would be impossible to do therapy without it. But we are not only basing our work in outside research, we also do it. We study the efficacy of the treatments that we apply, taking measures prior and post treatment; we collaborate with university research projects that try to uncover what processes lie behind the efficacy of some techniques and we always try to stay updated with the latest findings in our field.
A clinical psychologist’s work should not be a solitary one; experience, high formation and being rigourous doesn’t always mean that we, as a therapist, are going to be prepared for the next case. There are no super-therapists. At ITEC, we think that it can be very helpful to have a whole team studying your case and for the psychologist to be supported by well trained professionals. We achieve this through periodical clinical sessions in which we work together to find the best solutions for the most complex issues that can happen within therapy, while keeping all the details strictly confidential.
